MPC Groove 1.2: The funker setting

If you look at the MPC groove folder in Live 8, you will notice that there is a preset known as MPC 1/16 Funker with different swing options. The MPC funker swing is great for those musicians who love to sample and chop a break beat for verbatim and then copy the style of playing.

So imagine trying to learn a James Brown breakbeat and slicing the individual samples and replaying the break all over again. Then think about adding variations to the breakbeat style of playing you just learned. The easiest way I have found to playing to a metronome and then quantizing it is with this groove. It will feel more natural to the break you are playing to and adjusting to your main bpm should be a breeze.

Start off with the 60% Funker swing first and do fine adjustments from there. If you are using sounds from other sources along with the break you are making, make sure they are EQ'd to sound similar to the original drumset or else you might need a slightly different swing option altogether.

If you love digging in the crates and learning from records based on playing styles. Play with this groove to sound less like a drum machine and more like the funk drummer.
