MPC 2000XL + Live 7/8= love

So for a good two years I was without an MPC and whatever needed to be done beats wise was done all on either Live 6,7, or 8. Then recently I saw Native Instruments come out with Maschine and wanted something that integrated into Live like that as a controller, sequencer, and sound library. The only problem with Maschine was once you turned off your computer it would not be of use because it relied on the computer as a power source. So for the 600 dollar controller alongside the software, I realized that I shouldn't spend my money on that, I should just shell out some loot for a used MPC.

400 dollars later I was able to get a 2000XL and install a compact flash reader on it. Not only can I control my drum racks in Live, but when I turn off the laptop, I can still load up my samples on the MPC and make music outside of my computer. The other benefit is the amount of latency on an mpc is roughly 1 ms or less, while most of the time you will catch yourself running virtual samplers on your computer with 4 ms or more. So instead of shelling out 800 dollars for a hemmerfall interface, the cheapest route is still buying a used MPC. So if you have 600 to spare, you might want to use an mpc as a controller and also as a sampler.
