Dave Smith's Mopho: the Microkorg killer?![]() Original Source Ask yourself how often can you buy a brand new Analog synthesizer for $400? Usually if you go on craigslist you can find a used analog synthesizer for about $500. Now you can get one voice from the Dave Smith Prophet 08 Analog synthesizer for only $400. Bring your own keys to the battle Note that this is a rackmount synthesizer and you will need to use your own MIDI controller to play some sort of melodies. Then if you want to go crazy with this device you can push the red button. The red button on this device will let you play a note or latch (hold on to) a note and then sequences on. Many of the programs will also step sequence on their own without a synthesizer. Now I would still recommend using a midi controller to play things out. If you're adventurous plug in your pad controller and just try to play melodies like that. Monophonic This synth is monophonic meaning you can only hit one note at a time, but since you have a sampler you can always record your favorite notes and play them back on your sampler. Audio-in capabilities If you want to beef up drums and other sounds this device lets you bring in external audio and feed it through the famous Curtis Analog Low Pass filter. That is the same filter used in the Prophet series keyboards in the 80s. If you go shopping for vintage gear you know how hard it is to get the vintage analog filters for many of the instruments. If you are not going to use this as a synth that often then at least use it as an effects unit and ake sounds with that filter. This synthesizer will also give you a full stereo path! King of the $400 range I have played with the Prophet 08 here and there and I know how good one voice can sound so for $400 this is a steal. Normally the only types of synths you can get on a budget is the Korg Microkorg, Alesis Micron, or the Novation Xiosynth. The difference is all three of those synths are digital while this instrument is 100% analog. Here's the impressive demos of the Mopho
